Last week saw the annual Triangular Camp & Trophy at Newquay’s Heron Tennis Centre. The annual event brought together junior teams from TC Steinbach (Frankfurt, Germany), Set Point Tennis Academy (London) and Heron for a week long’s tennis programme.

The event follows Heron's annual trip to Germany when a team of our best young players flew out to base at TC Steinbach for clay court training before competing in a regional tournament. The team of Harry Wilmot, Will Hare, Archie Mallett, Rory Duncan and Jake Moore were hosted by players and families of TC Steinbach, and led by Heron's Head Pro Matt Trudgeon. The trip provided invaluable match experience, plus it provided the young players with the opportunity to travel without parents and to stay with host families.

The Triangular week then gave the returning team and many other boys and girls aged between 11 and 16 years from Heron, the chance to host their German and London guests. The busy week included on and off court activities including: beach runs, tennis and fitness drills and coaching, team games, practice singles and doubles matches and a surfing lesson.

A new feature of this year’s programme was a trip to Perranporth Tennis Club where many of the players got to play on grass courts for the first time. The group also went to Retallack Aqua Park on the penultimate day organised by some of our hosting families. PHOTO: Katarina (TC Steinbach) in one of the morning drills sessions.  The final day traditionally features the Triangular Trophy when the three teams face off in singles and doubles matches to see which team would claim the trophy. This year’s event was won by the Germans of TC Steinbach: Alex, Robert, Noah, Konrad, Mara, Katarina, Max and Jess, the stand-in German!

Following the Triangular Trophy matches, the hosting parents joined juniors and coaches for the Pro-Am Doubles Competition, which was won by Karen. Other award winners were: Max (TC Steinbach) for the Fastest Serve, the Most Improved Player was Robert (TC Steinbach), and the Gordon Birt Award (awarded to the player displaying the best attitude and effort) was presented to Aimee (Heron).
