Kay Represents GB in over 70's Biathle bringing home a silver medal
Imagine swimming in the very warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico !
Imagine running in temperatures of 89F!
This was my exhilarating experience when competing in the World Biathle Championship in Florida at the start of November. I was representing GB in the over 70s Biathle. There were 34 countries represented with a strong contingent from France and South Africa. The World Championships are held each year and are preceded by the European Championships. Competitors for both events have to take part in a qualifying competition and achieve the qualifying time.
For my age group it is a sprint event comprising a 400 metre run, a transition then a 100 metre swim, another transition followed by an additional 400 metre run. The transition is often called the fourth element. This is with good reason as many things can go wrong with shoes, swim hats and goggles!
Happily for me, everything went very well and I won the silver medal. I prepared thoroughly thanks to the expertise and encouragement of my personal trainer. It was an enjoyable and satisfying experience. I will continue to train for the next season always hoping for improvement.
As well as individual medals, there are also team medals available. However, three competitors are needed for a team. GB has two team members but a third is needed. If you would like to travel, make new friends with a spot of running and swimming just let me know!
